May 2009
Hello to all our friends and family .
As you can see from these photos we are cutting up an 80 foot Guapinol hardwood tree located up on the side of our volcano. It blew over 11 years ago during hurricane Mitch. Only the outer bark is rotting! |

The massive rootball! |
|
This tree is 6 feet thick at the base and the first branch was 50 feet up. I bought this new Stihl chainsaw just for this job. It more than pays for half its cost in savings as I only pay a laboror to run it at $15 for an 8 hour day! |

New chain saw |
|
This huge hole is 200 years worth of termite damage! |
Moving these 30 foot pieces are very difficult |
|
|
It took four men to carry this slab down the mountain |
Two truck loads of heavy lumber are ready to be hand-carried down the hill |
Huge boards! |
It took six men to carry this one |
We had a team of 21 men help carry two truck loads of lumber down the volcano 300 meters for 6 hours, real tough work for only a dollar and hour! We are starting our third week now and it might take a month to completely cut up into usable lumber in dimensions of 5X5's, 4X3's, 6X3's, 5X3's and thick boards that are 3X20. They are happy to have the work and I pay the best wages on Ometepe as a testimony to God's fairness and faithfulness. All the wood we have accumulated so far is for projects like the future Pat Hick Clinic, pharmacy, lab etc,............... |
